Some stories are never found in history books. They live instead in people's memories, around family tables, in village courtyards, in old flour mills, across wheat fields, and in the kitchens where bread was lovingly kneaded by hand. These are the stories that have shaped the identity of our island stories that deserve to be preserved and shared.

Inspired by this belief, Cyprus Millers by Hadjigiorkis created Seeds of Memory, a storytelling initiative that records the personal memories of people from across Cyprus. Through their voices, the project aims to preserve our island's intangible cultural heritage while celebrating the enduring connection between our people and the land, wheat, flour, bread and the traditions of baking.
Behind every interview is a lifetime of experiences, values and traditions. Through the stories of our participants, we gain a glimpse into everyday life in another era, rediscover long-forgotten customs and better understand the important role that wheat and bread once played in family life and local communities throughout Cyprus.
The First Seeds of Memory
Georgia Patsalou

Our first story takes us to Sotira, Famagusta, where life revolved around the flour mill and the wheat harvest. Born in 1953, Mrs. Georgia grew up surrounded by the distinctive sound of the traditional stone mill and the aroma of freshly milled flour, as her family owned and operated the village mill.
Her memories bring an entire era back to life, a time when the mill was more than a place of production, it was a meeting point for the community, and flour was at the heart of everyday life. Her personal recollections offer a valuable insight into the history and evolution of rural Cyprus. She also brought with her a traditional Prosforo (Holy Bread), sharing not only her memories but also a symbol of faith, family and Cypriot tradition.

Maria Aresti

Our second interview transports us to Rizokarpaso in the 1940s. Mrs. Maria grew up in a community where daily life was deeply rooted in the land, family and tradition, while the unique culinary heritage of the Karpasia region formed an essential part of everyday living.
Today, she continues to pass on her knowledge and treasured family recipes to younger generations, reminding us that tradition does not belong only to the past, it is a living legacy that continues to evolve, inspire and bring people together. For our interview, she prepared traditional Rizokarpaso delicacies: Genopittes with raisins, Avkotes and Schinnopittes, bringing with her the authentic flavours and baking traditions of Karpasia.
Paraskevi Louli – Papageorgiou

Our third story explores the world of traditional baking. With warmth and authenticity, Mrs. Paraskevi shares the knowledge and experiences she gained throughout a lifetime devoted to the art of bread making.
Her memories reveal that baking was far more than a daily household task. It was an act of love, creativity and care for the family, a tradition and a skill naturally passed down from one generation to the next, keeping Cyprus' baking heritage alive. She brought with her a traditional Athienitiko bread, offering us not only a taste of a treasured local recipe but also a living expression of Cyprus' rich baking heritage.

More Than a Series of Interviews
Seeds of Memory is more than a collection of personal stories. It is an effort to preserve the memories of people who experienced a different Cyprus and to document traditions and experiences that might otherwise be lost over time.
Each story highlights the importance of oral history, reminding us that our elders pass down much more than memories. They share values, knowledge and ways of life that have shaped our communities and continue to define who we are today.
A Journey Thatt Continues
The Seeds of Memory series continues with new voices from every corner of Cyprus. Each new interview adds another piece to the rich mosaic of our cultural heritage, connecting the past with the present and creating a lasting legacy for future generations.
For Cyprus Millers by Hadjigiorkis, wheat is more than the foundation of our business. It is a symbol of our history, our traditions and our identity. Through Seeds of Memory, we honour the people who have kept these traditions alive while helping preserve Cyprus' collective memory for generations to come.
Because every story recorded today is another Seed of Memory that will continue to grow for generations to come.
